The
party is set to include Jones classics every hour 12 midnight – 7 p.m.,
listener birthday greetings and requests throughout the day, and a
special edition of “The Eddie Stubbs Show” 7 p.m. – midnight featuring
nothing but George Jones recordings.
The party will also go online at WSM’s new website, wsmonline.com,
as listeners from around the world visiting the site can not only
listen to the Jones-related programming, but also submit their own
birthday wishes or requests for their favorite Jones tunes and enter to
win limited-edition prints celebrating Jones’ milestone birthday and
tickets to a Grand Ole Opry performance also celebrating Jones’ big
day.
“We’re
excited to launch this brand new website by celebrating one of the most
influential artists ever in the history of the music we play,” said Joe
Limardi, 650 AM WSM Operation Manager. “George Jones is a member of the
Country Music Hall of Fame, but he’s also made his mark on everything
else listeners hear on the station from bluegrass, to Americana and
gospel. It’s going to be quite a day for quite a legend.”
About 650 AM WSM:
650
AM WSM debuted on Oct. 5, 1925, and less than two months later, the
show would birth its most famous show (and the show that would make
country music famous), the Grand Ole Opry. The Opry was the first of
WSM’s shows to develop such an excited audience that fans would visit
live studio broadcasts. That tradition continues today not only with the
Opry, but with other signature programming. WSM is a broadcasting giant
and a friend to hundreds of thousands of fans. The station has won
hundreds of broadcasting awards and was named Country Radio Station of
the Century by “Radio & Records” in 2000. WSM’s personalities are
nationally recognized figures in country music, and listeners range from
U.S. Presidents, to Country Music Hall of Famers, to artists climbing
the charts toward their first No. 1 hits.
